Waking

Photo: (c) Jamie K. Reaser

I awaken, the fingertips of the gods
wiping sweat from my brow.
What day is this?
What shall I commit my heart to?
What will I invite to humble me?

A bare foot settles on the old wood flooring.
It is followed by another.

This is how it begins.

Wonderment,
and stride.

The Master of Coca Leaves

Photo: (c) Jamie K. Reaser
In honor and memory of don Miguelito;
guardian, gatekeeper, and chosen one

There are the chosen ones among us; the ones who lightning
strikes, more than once. The ones who are blinded so that
they can learn to see in the pitch of darkness. The ones who
live in hermitude because the filaments radiating from their
heart are tethered to everything, and it hurts. A body can be
too small to contain a soul. A mountain can be too small to
contain a soul. Mastery comes from continually showing up and
saying, “Yes!” You cannot serve another option. I was blessed to
witness you there, lifting your gaze skyward with extended arms,
to know you when your life was the offering
for the prayer
request you never made.

The Passion for Freedom

Photos (c) Jamie K. Reaser
In loving memory of Leonard J. Soucy, Jr. - my first mentor and true friend

Man’s hand has crippled you,
Some beyond repair.
Guns, poison, pollution, and noise.
The unknowing child, the blood thirsty man.

Man’s hand has mended you.
Legs and wings set, operations complete.

The care and love of a few has pieced you together,
As you have piece together the hearts of those
who cared.

So now I lift you high on my gloved-hand.
The sun catches and brightens your feathers,
And you small bird, lighten its rays.

A final lift and release.

You’re free, oh wonder, free as before.
Soar on my friend, for eternity!
